Pre-Medical Foundation Year
The Pre-Medical (Pre-Med) Foundation Year (FY) is an alternative pathway in our Medicine programme. It consists of a series of stand-alone and integrated modules with a modularised assessment that equip students with a solid grounding in biomedical sciences.

It is delivered in 2 semesters - Semester 1 (September to January) and Semester 2 (January to June), with each comprising:

Indian nationals intending to practice in India at any stage in their medical career are required to sit the NEET examination in India and obtain a Certificate of Eligibility from the National Medical Commission of India, before commencing medical studies.

2. European Union (EU) Applicants:
RUMC CANNOT accept applicants who are eligible for the Central Applicants Office (CAO). However, we do review applicants on a case-to-case basis.

1. What is the Pre-Medical Foundation Year at RUMC?
The Pre-Medical Foundation Year (PFY) at RCSI & UCD Malaysia Campus (RUMC) is a 9-month preparatory programme designed to bridge the gap between secondary school and medical school. It equips students with the academic knowledge and learning skills required for entry into the 5-Year Medical Degree programme at RUMC.
2. How long is the programme?
The Pre-Medical Foundation Year is a 9-month full-time programme divided into two semesters. Each semester includes 12 weeks of teaching, 1 week of revision, and 2 weeks of examinations.
3. When does the intake begin?
There is one intake per year, which begins in September. Students are encouraged to apply early to secure a place and allow time for the processing of documents and visa (for international students).
4. What are the programme fees?
- Malaysian students: RM 40,000
- International students: RM 45,000
5. What are the entry requirements?
- Applicants coming from STPM backgrounds are required to meet the 3 B+’s or 3B’s in A-Levels in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics.
- Applicants must have at least five (5) Bs in the following subjects (or equivalent) at SPM/ICGSE/O-Level or equivalent:
- Biology

- Mathematics
- One additional subject
6. What are the additional requirements for international applicants?
International applicants must meet the academic entry requirements and provide proof of English language proficiency (IELTS, TOEFL, or GCE O-Level English). Indian applicants must also qualify through NEET and obtain the Certificate of Eligibility. EU applicants are assessed on a case-by-case basis.
7. What subjects or modules will I study?
- The programme consists of 12 modules carrying a total of 60 ECTS credits (5 credits each). Modules are spread across two semesters and include subjects such as:

8. What happens after completing the Pre-Medical Foundation Year?
Students who successfully complete the programme will receive a firm offer into RUMC’s 5-Year Medical Degree (MB BCh BAO) — a joint degree awarded by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI and University College Dublin (UCD).
9. How do I apply for the Pre-Medical Foundation Year?
Applications can be submitted directly through the RUMC website.
You’ll need to provide:
- Passport-sized photo
- Certified copy of NRIC/passport or birth certificate
- Certified copies of academic transcripts (SPM, IGCSE, O-Level, etc.)
- English language certificate (if applicable)
- Curriculum Vitae (for mature students)
10. What is the language of instruction
All modules are taught in English, ensuring students are well-prepared for the language standards of international medical education.
11. Is accommodation available for students?
Yes. RUMC provides student accommodation options that are safe, fully furnished, and conveniently located near the campus. The Student Affairs Office can assist students in finding suitable housing.
12. Are there scholarships or financial aid options?
Scholarships and bursaries are offered periodically to high-achieving students and those who demonstrate financial need. You can check the RUMC Scholarships page or contact the Admissions Office for current opportunities.
13. What academic and personal support services are available?
RUMC offers comprehensive academic support, including tutorial sessions, mentoring, and study skills workshops. Students also have access to pastoral care, counselling and extracurricular activities to promote well-being and community engagement.
14. What happens if I fail a module?
Students who fail a module may be eligible for re-assessment or repetition depending on their performance and the regulations set by RUMC’s Academic Board. Academic advisors will guide students on the best course of action.
15. Where is the campus located?
The Pre-Medical Foundation Year is conducted at RUMC’s campus in Penang, Malaysia, an island renowned for its vibrant culture and high quality of life. The campus is equipped with modern laboratories, learning facilities, and student spaces.
16. Is the Pre-Medical Foundation Year suitable for international students?
